This is sort of a non sequitur, but is Al Jewish? His robots have the names of Hebrew letters: Gimel, mostly, but another model was “Beth” which resembles the Hebrew “Bet.” Sorry to bother you, it just always warms my heart to see Jewish characters in media, whether or not they’re actively practicing.
According to some older sketches on Blue’s blog, he is indeed! Loved golems when he was younger, too. ^^

Al’s not canonically Jewish, no, but as a roboticist Al’s more than passingly familiar with the Prague golem story and the Hebrew alphabet (scientists often use their letters to label things once they’ve exhausted the Greek alphabet). Brendan was the one raised Jewish, more culturally than religiously, but Al’s knowledge definitely piqued his interest early on in their relationship.

well, to be fair, not many people designate their strictly-business partners as people able to make medical decisions for them! it’s pretty obvious that someone named in an advance directive would be more than a business partner, and likely more than a friend, too.
(fortunately {?}, i don’t really have experience with That Kind Of Thing, so i wasn’t aware of those specific Nuances and Connotations, Discotheque.)
“Privacy concerns” aka I’m going to download my dying boyfriend’s brain onto a computer so I can maybe bring him back one day. We can see right through you, Brendan.
Although I still wonder, is the new Al the same Al that died or just a copy of an Al that will never comeback?
Wait– Since Brendan is still (present-time-track)trying to figure out who built the New Al, if he (will have- next sequence in this flashback?) records his personality etc., that someone else must have stolen/copied the recording, eh?

So in the end Al came through for Brendan.
He chose not to hide him when it came down to it. He’d rather be exposed than have Brendan face not being able to see him, know anything about his condition or not be able to decide for him. That’s one hell of a vote of confidence, especially for someone with as many issues as Al.
Too bad, he couldn’t face his issues earlier. More for his own sake than for Brendans.
I immediately thought of Desdemona’s handkerchief – the key detail that reveals to the characters the nature of the tragic misunderstanding.
There’s something that feels appropriate about Al having granted Brendan power of attorney (or something close to it) in his advance directive. Makes what Brendan is about to do seem…better, somehow.
WHAT THE HELL MINNESOTA. And wow that nurse. What a dick. That advanced directive feels like an olive branch somehow.

If you have no other visitors and no immediate family, that’s BS. Even Ohio wouldn’t stop you from visiting during hours, no matter what your relationship was, unless they were explicitly told NOT to.
