I went back and looked at the first time Al meets Sulla. She looks surprised, but mostly she looks happy and pleased and excited. It’s… not entirely impossible that she’s behind this!
Still haven’t ruled out a big role for Tsade, but all of a sudden what I’m thinking of is the ballerina saying that the instructions for Al’s reconstruction came from “Mr. Pinsky’s estate.” And they talked a lot about bringing Al home, which is exactly how Sulla’s discussing it. Dear me, the suspense!
And it intrigues me that Brendan (apparently?) hasn’t (openly?) guessed that Sulla might be behind this, in spite of how much of an allowance he gives her and how reverently he’s been talking about Al.
Perhaps, though I think that for her, she probably just doesn’t think Al ought to be beholden to whoever created him. Al can, and should, be the master of his own destiny. And besides, Al is family to Sulla. She doesn’t want to lose him so quickly.
I’ve learned nothing is predictable in this comic, but when something is revealed it makes complete sense. That is part of why I love it…along with the beautiful art, complex characters and funny moments.
I’m still thinking Gimel was involved, somehow, although Sulla might make a lot more sense. So if Sulla built her father, does that make her her own grandmother?
OK, but can we talk about how insistent Al is on finding a role for himself? How easily he accepts he’s supposed to be doing something for someone, even though he has no idea what or who? I think that speaks to how hard he’s always tried to fit in…
OK, it was definitely Sulla. Just look at her face!

Sulla, you’re sounding mighty suspicious there.
I was thinking the exact same thing. The last frame is the kind of thing you might hear a parent asking a child…or a creator asking her creation.
OHHHHHH. SHE did it. she brought him back ! OHHh?
oh my god, this has been drving me crazy for like 3 years
Sulla’s question could be answered by pointing out that Al might have been created to hurt Brendan in some way.
I don’t think that’s true, but it’s a possibility that Al might have thought of.
Sulla might be naive, or she might be too aware of how Al was actually created to think of possibilities that are colder and more manipulative.

This sure makes it SOUND like Sulla did it, but it could also be a red herring. Braced for the possibility of one more twist!

Oh. Of course that’s why they were able to fill in the gaps from Al’s missing scan. Sulla volunteered.
But you do know where you’re doing it. Or at least you should; Brendan, Sulla, and the mysterious robots all agree where your home is.
