Who would pass up on the ability to fly if given that option? Yes, it makes Sula more different, but I can bet she thinks it’s worth it. It would sure be worth it to me! Plus, I think she only flies when no one from “outside” can see her. I think one survey found that flying was the super power the majority of people wished for. Personally, it still would take a long time to get anywhere, so I would prefer to be able to “jump” instantaneously from one place to another.

I’m still not sure Al was trans. Human gender fluidity is a mess of genetics, hormones and mindset. Al clearly had a lot of male hormones given his build, whereas Sulla ONLY has mindset. It’s possible that what that mix resulted in in Al as homosexuality worked out differently in Sulla because it’s purely mental.

I think the wish to fly was one of the first physical manifestations of her gender dysphoria… It would have given her some power that she could grab hold of, and would have worked as a pretty good distraction, at least for a little bit. Kind of like how Caitlyn Jenner would run to try to forget her own gender dysphoria. In the end, flying is pretty cool whether you’re happy with your gender or not. And, in the end, it’s a couple of parts that she can choose to use or not use, and can be removed when needed. Having a super power doesn’t make you less human, it just makes you keep more secrets.

Sulla has frequently expressed a strong desire to ‘pass for human’ as a young girl, and not draw too much attention or scrutiny to her human façade, as this will destroy the illusion. She even mentions to Al that the reason that synthetics do certain mundane things is because ‘people do’. Well, flying around like Supergirl might seem very ‘cool’ at first, but it sure as hell attracts a lot of attention, and isn’t a remotely ‘human’ thing to do, and is completely at odds with her desire to pass as human.

There is actually a great graphic novel where Superman has to break it gently to Wonderwoman that she really doesn’t know very much about the people she is trying to help, and that to understand humanity you have to work alongside people as one of them.

When you are floating immortal above humanity, you aren’t going to be much a part of it, or mistaken for human. If Sulla wants to be superhuman, she is going to understand that puts one more hurdle between herself and her goal.
