Swept away with joy—both of them. It has been a while in this arc since we’ve seen Brendan genuinely smile like that. Accepting and assisting Sulla seems like it would be very healing for him. First, it makes it clear she is not Al—which has to be a release for Brendan on several levels. Second, he knows she will never have to suffer quite like Al did when it comes to being closeted about her true gender (if he was trans—I believe he was as there were many hints, but not sure if it’s clear yet).
Sadly, we know she does end up feeling something like it on different level in the future when she’s outed as a synthetic lifeform. Hoping that story ends happier than Al’s (first) life did for him. Hoping future Al and Brendan find healing as well.
I’m still not sure Al was trans. Human gender fluidity is a mess of genetics, hormones and mindset. Al clearly had a lot of male hormones given his build, whereas Sulla ONLY has mindset. It’s possible that what that mix resulted in in Al as homosexuality worked out differently in Sulla because it’s purely mental.
I’ve gotten to see this kind of thing in a few humans I know and love, but (except in time-lapse transition videos on YouTube) it’s never this sudden in a species that doesn’t swap out parts easily. So here we have the same kind of emotional shift as in humans undergoing transitions, but compressed into a tiny time frame. Fascinating.
While I think it is a wonderful dreamlike fantasy to imagine super heroic individual flight, the reality is that it would create even further social separation/rift between the individual who supposedly wished to pass for human and ordinary humans in society. Sulla has frequently expressed a strong desire to ‘pass for human’ as a young girl, and not draw too much attention or scrutiny to her human façade, as this will destroy the illusion. She even mentions to Al that the reason that synthetics do certain mundane things is because ‘people do’. Well, flying around like Supergirl might seem very ‘cool’ at first, but it sure as hell attracts a lot of attention, and isn’t a remotely ‘human’ thing to do, and is completely at odds with her desire to pass as human.
There is actually a great graphic novel where Superman has to break it gently to Wonderwoman that she really doesn’t know very much about the people she is trying to help, and that to understand humanity you have to work alongside people as one of them.
When you are floating immortal above humanity, you aren’t going to be much a part of it, or mistaken for human. If Sulla wants to be superhuman, she is going to understand that puts one more hurdle between herself and her goal.
I think the wish to fly was one of the first physical manifestations of her gender dysphoria… It would have given her some power that she could grab hold of, and would have worked as a pretty good distraction, at least for a little bit. Kind of like how Caitlyn Jenner would run to try to forget her own gender dysphoria. In the end, flying is pretty cool whether you’re happy with your gender or not. And, in the end, it’s a couple of parts that she can choose to use or not use, and can be removed when needed. Having a super power doesn’t make you less human, it just makes you keep more secrets.
Who would pass up on the ability to fly if given that option? Yes, it makes Sula more different, but I can bet she thinks it’s worth it. It would sure be worth it to me! Plus, I think she only flies when no one from “outside” can see her. I think one survey found that flying was the super power the majority of people wished for. Personally, it still would take a long time to get anywhere, so I would prefer to be able to “jump” instantaneously from one place to another.
Awww…
There’s something in my eye.
i’m not crying you’re crying
*Miss*! Gimel is on point with the pronouns already.
I’m guessing Brendan and Gimel had already been using the proper pronouns since the scene prior to this.
Perks of being a robot: perfect memory, perfect verbal control
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
*ahem*
That is all. Carry on. And lovely as always, Blue.
*sigh* Happy.
GLEEEEEE
Man, that’s great and all but I really miss Al and the future storyline. It’s been two years since we last saw him.

Omg, this is so cute.

Allow me to join in on the chorus of *D’awwww*!
I love that Sulla can be the Magical Girl they always were inside, and thank you, Brendan, for not resisting, and letting them.
“Oh… well, see, I had some um, enhancements made, much cooler than piercings, right?”
ok when did she start being able to fly? did i miss that?
super cool! how do you pronounce “gimel”? is it “GIH-MUL” or “GUY-MEL”?
Brendan’s faaaaace at hearing that ;W; I’m so happy for them both!
