Page 22. Whoever discovered that drawing little lines at the end of a character’s mouth totally changes their expression is a comics genius.
I am currently traveling! Right now I’m in Atlanta to participate in the Atlanta Science Festival – come see me on Thursday 3/23 as I talk about my experience drawing and researching Meal! Then, this weekend, I will be at Smith College in Northampton, MA for ConBust. See you folks there!
This is really cool! Can’t wait to see what young “humanized” Sulla will look like. Lucille has a right to be worried (probably worried Brendan is making an Al skin for himself), but if she knew the whole situation she may relax a bunch.
My copy of OHS Volume 2 arrived on my desk today just in time for my lunch break. I flipped through it to discover a lovely little bonus comic at the end. Thanks Blue. :-)
“Whoever discovered that drawing little lines at the end of a character’s mouth totally changes their expression is a comics genius.”
I totally know what you mean, and it’s such a strange phenomenon.
right? Brendan: WHUPS :I (edited to add, pls assume this is a serif I!)
(i think it’s cause it implies the ends of the lips being tightened so that the cheek overlaps them)
That technique dates back at least as far as early Charles Schulz, and likely a lot farther back. Although I wouldn’t be too surprised if Schulz originated it; he was amazing at making very expressive faces with just a few lines and dots.
No, I can’t catch up. Not now! It was just getting interesting. Ok, that’s a lie… you had me interested since page 1!
oh wow I just binge read this whole comment and I’m a crying mess! looking forward to following it in real time now :D (seriously everything from the plot to the characters to the art is utterly amazing I have a new fave comic now lol)
The little details are what is impressing me at the moment: Like the stains on his clothing. It does amuse me that Sulla-to-Be is going to have an avatar whose hair that was originally designed as underarm fluff. That’s hilarious.
Not just underarm fluff (I think most prosthetics don’t go up that high) but shin fuzz and toe hair and forearm pelt. I love that he had never even considered it. Look at his face.
