I still don’t get why he’s so upset. Time hasn’t really passed for him, whatever possible break-up related argument they had in the past is still fresh for him, and the two of them haven’t even had much time to spend with each other since he woke up.
Sulla needs him more than he needs to deal with whatever’s wrong.
Tbh, I think anyone’s heart would break if someone they cared about basically said “I wish I didn’t love you.”
Like you said, this is all fresh for Al still. Even if they were having problems, he still cared a lot about Brendan. Brendan had had 16 years to cope, on the other hand. While he might feel himself caring again, he’s likely not in love the way he was in the past. Al still is.

The sad thing about this breakup is that it was Al who originally thought the relationship might be a mistake (I actually went back and re-read everything). It was Brendan who overrode his objections and convinced him otherwise. It would seem Brendan has a bad habit of breaking Al’s heart when the chips are down.
