I am suspecting that some of their friends knew what they were to each other, even if they never said anything.
Also! I am totally empathising with tiny Al, I mean, ahem, Jimena, the little kid carrying a book just a little outside the crowd behind her mom. (Aka going to adult parties as a tiny book loving introvert-ish kid) Poor kid connected with Al, too.
I like how, in the light of the next page, you can now see a lot of his friends giving him concerned looks as he bubbles away like that. Like they know what it hides.
I wonder if his dressing like Al was intentional or subconscious.
