Page 69. Deanne was fun to write.
Thanks to those of you who came to the Decatur Book Festival – next stop is SPX in a couple weeks!
And the Oath Anthology is almost funded! Can we give it one final push?

I think you mean “I just think Al,” not “I just thing Al,” (: (ps love your comic!)
You wrote “thing” in the last panel instead of “think”.
Deanne seems awesome by the way.
Fixed! That’s what I get for taking a weekend off between creation and posting. :p
Yikes. I can’t tell if it’s intentional or not but it really sounds like the Colonel immediately assumed Maggie was just an artist and not also an engineer/scientist. I can’t even imagine.
I’m not sure how this necessarily offensive. “just an artist”? Sure, there’s a Western cultural coding of scientific and technical mastery as masculine, but I don’t see it as demeaning to project an artistic identity onto someone, regardless of their gender identity. Like, if she *was* a design advisor, that wouldn’t be knock, that would be pretty cool, too.
I said “just an artist” because she is BOTH an artist AND a scientist. I didn’t mean to imply that art was a lesser field. (:
I have no idea why I read Deanne’s lines in Garnet’s voice but I love her!
He’s getting paper and colored pens, Brendan! Keep up with the program, will ya?
That, or he’s found a sufficiently big cardboard box and is mentally preparing himself for the daunting task of Social Interaction.
Could be both.
(It’s probably both.)
It seemed like Lee actually seemed a bit more agreeable in this page. I don’t know if it’s just me, but he seemed actually interested in what they did and asked questions that were seriously curious.
He also seems…to have grown more subdued. Almost as a parallel to his level of dominance (I don’t know if that’s the right word for it, sorry) in the conversation, he takes up less and less panel space from panel 1, 2 to panel 3, 4. :p
I like how the Colonel looks confident and relaxed up until he realizes these women are doing things other than art /design.
brendan reck’ns al will like deanne, eh?
i dunno..
..as jittery as al had been about “blending in,” i’m not sure how he’d feel about his seeming too comfortable with a woman who does not appear to fit in with a hetero-normative presentiment.
but, who knows?
maybe allie will surprise us all!
I think this many new people, when he’s not expecting any of them, in ‘their’ personal space, would be enough to cause a bit of a breakdown, nevermind non-typical gender norms.
we shall find out tomorrow, i reck’n!
I’ve been uncharacteristically quiet because I’ve just survived a triple bypass – good to see the comic zipping along and all of you still reading it.
Whoa! Best wishes in your recovery!
Thanx Blue – your comic is spectacular!
