I honestly understand why Al wouldn’t, because he believes the investors won’t accept him for being in a same-sex relationship that’s also has a larger age difference. And probably the little interaction with people Al normally has is involved. However, I do belief that after knowing and loving Brendan for a long time, and worked on a project with him that could change both of your lives, it would be right to do what would make him happy.
I know that this is a fictional story but the these issues with people are real, no matter what kind of relationship, sacrifices are meant to be made.
I just had to say something. This page made me feel intense or something.
I would hope the issue here with others looking down on their relationship is the age difference and not the gay thing. I just hope by the time we reach the making super robots period of human history people are over 2 dudes kissing
Considering that this flashback is set in 2002, I’m going to go ahead and say that the gay thing is a large part of it. Considering that here in the states people still have to fight for the right to marry the person they choose, I’m guessing that it’s one of the most pressing problems for Al.
Then again, this is an alternate universe where there is a magical explosion of technological advances in robotics, so maybe other things are different in this timeline too.
Yeah, exactly. I have to wonder how far in the future this is supposed to be that we have giant robots but people are still afraid of being openly gay.
… it’s not in the future at all; in fact it’s in the past — this takes place in 2002, and Al was born in 1961, so he’s got some (unfortunately) very good reasons for his uneasiness.
Ah I hadn’t actually realized that this was set that far back. I assumed that it was farther ahead than actual human history due to advanced robots but yeah, in 2002 their relationship would absolutely be an issue. (I’d like to think not among the scientific community though)
When you’re reading a comic like this and following the story and the dialog, it’s easy to gloss over the details like that beautiful poster you’ve drawn from yet another angle. I just wanted to say nice work.
every time i read a page from this webcomic that pulls at a heartstring i end up going back to the beginning to relive the build-up to that moment.
and each time i reread it i’m looking for clues.
why do i get the feeling Sulla’s the one who brought Al back?
she has the resources (she asked earlier for an advance, remember?), she’s smart, and she’s his prototype made by Brendan himself, so she’s got the right make-up for it. and if any of the robots wanted Al back (the robo-ballerina at the beginning said “All of us” are happy to have Al back), who better than Sulla to do it? after all, the robots at the beginning DID say that Mr. Pinsky’s estate commissioned to reconstruct him….
i bet it was Sulla. who else fits the bill?
(if i’m right, i’m sorry for spoiling it)
You aren’t the first one to believe (especially to comment) that Sulla brought Al back. Some (probably most) of us (the reader) believe very similar causes that all greatly involve her.
If you read some of the comments from several previous pages (mostly in chapter 2) you’ll find similar kinds of predictions, evaluations, assumptions, etc. including mine.
Dammit.
I don’t think it was Sulla at all, it was probably the robot community as a whole that I imagine she’s probably still fairly insulated from… but the advance was for birthday presents. For Brendan.
dammit
Honestly I’m kinda with al. It kinda sucks to be guilt tripped into doing something and trust me Berndon fully intended that comment to get under his skin. Not in a bad way mind you but in a way to make al feel uncomfortable. Also, I want to be frank. The whole company thing is mostly Berndons idea, I think al is saying I love you in a diffrent way by going along with this even though he clearly is not as motivated as his bf. He wants him to be happy and see his dream come true. If left to al he would tinker with his robots quietly in obsurity until the day he died and be perfectly happy about it.
Gettin’ shades of Six Feet Under’s Keith and David here. That’s a good thing- I like my fiction to acknowledge that we struggle with this stuff and it’s messy and it hurts.
Blue, this may be a stupid question / request, but will the magic star girl poster on t heir wall ever be available for us lot as a print? I remember you said once you were thinking of selling it. If you already have I apologize for not paying attention! But I think its gorgeous and I would love to have it on my wall to display my OHS love!
Cute to see them like that, but sad… I wonder if Al really can’t (for some reason). Of if he just afraid to show this side of himself.
DAMMIT AL, hold Brendon’s hand at the demonstration blarg or I will kill someone urgh
Seriously though, wonderful breather of a page :)
Oooooooh just let me suffer ok
Ohh the pain!

“You’ve done plenty to ready for this thing”?
Also, it’s sad seeing young Brendan so lifeless… and he’s been looking forward to this con, too…

April 8, 9:00 pm central…..I just got the feeling that the next page will be the blue future……..
It’ll probably start out with Brendan showing Al inside the HQ or something like that.

I never say that it was Sulla. I only say that
it is possible that the robots brought Al back and it is possible Sulla is involved somehow. Period. Word for word.
That’s what I believe. Its just a prediction.
Anything could happen.

What’s worse, shame or denial.

al’s looking remorseful about his shortcoming (as some might consider it), at least
´poor guy
(even their big day is to be marred by an emotional rift. . . . .)
