Ouch. I’d assumed Brendan was upset about not being able to find it because he didn’t want Al to know that he’d lost it… guess he’s not that much of a romantic.
I suspected Sulla was behind Al’s reconstruction early on, and I think I remember reading others’ speculation on the same- now I’m almost sure of it.
It makes sense to me; she would certainly have motivation for bringing Al back, not just as an attempt to give her father a chance at new happiness, but for identity purposes, as well. With Al “alive” again Sulla would be able to learn about and examine her source while showing that she is distinct from him, that she is an individual.
If it was Sulla, perhaps putting the multitool in Al’s pocket was her way of rebelling against being Al’s shadow/replacement/reboot. Not sure what the right word would be…
(i don’t think the word is either “alternate” nor “surrogate” nor “substitute.”
is it?)
i definitely like your theories on what could be happening (and “why?”), too, alex!
brendan apparently had given his daughter free reign on what sort of “projects” she may have undertook; sulla has allustair’s mind (but not his memories).. ..so, why wouldn’t sulla have the capability of taking what she had learned from brendan and. . . . ?
That’s what I think too. If Sulla built Al (as I suspect she did) it makes more sense to me that she’d do it for Brendan as much as herself.
She knows she was built to be a new Al, although it seems fairly clear from the family photos that she enjoys her life with Brendan and is confident that he loves her.
She also knows how much her father cared for Al and missed him.
No doubt she’s heard about him endlessly, including how tragic his death was.
If anyone could figure out how to build a lifelike robot… surely it would be Al – or the ‘daughter’ who is a combination of his and Brendan’s genius, and a robot herself. I bet she’s curious about him too, so why not bring him back? And if she did, it makes sense that she’d give him back his multitool. After all, it belongs to him.
I doubt it was Sulla…she acted completely surprised to see Al, and she just doesn’t seem like she would be that good at lying. Although it would explain why she took his arrival so much in stride.
Anyway, my pet theory is that it was some jealous business competitor who did it as a publicity stunt or a burn on Brendan- “see, I succeeded where he failed” kind of thing. It’s not very likely but I think it would be kinda cool.
i’m not sure i can take it too kindly if, after all this time, blue suddenly decides to spring on us such an important plot element (“The Rival!”), without having properly alluded to that other character (who surely will not only appear for one to three pages) who is associated with said “element,” prior.
i have faith that blue did no such thing.
then again, i’m the type who usually needs things spelled out for him.
so my word may not be very reliable here.
Oh god. If that was me, I would throw the damn thing to the ground and walk out. But I bet he’ll just shove it in his hands and tell him that she’ll have a better use for it than he does. And then walk out of the place but Sulla stops him again. Sulla come to the rescue! My fangirl heart is broken! (,-n-,)
Is it wrong that my first reaction was ‘oh good, they’re arguing properly’? I feel like they need to do a whole bunch of yelling at each other, and it’s been on the cards for ages, and I’m just going to sit here with popcorn hoping it’s all basically therapeutic :)
Also ohhhh hints and teases as to Al’s resurrection. I like.
I know this is a serious emotional scene and all, but can we all just take a moment to appreciate that Al woke up with it in his pocket, and Brendan ought to know, seeing as he put it there.
or maybe i’m just looking too hard for innuendo i don’t even know
Yeesh, poor Al. It can’t be nice realizing Brendan’s replaced him…
oh this is so sad, now Brendan has to think of something very good to make this right again
Ohhh dear, oh snap D:
Ouch. I’d assumed Brendan was upset about not being able to find it because he didn’t want Al to know that he’d lost it… guess he’s not that much of a romantic.
i’m guessing, maybe, it’s brendan’s turn to be the grouch?
now i have to go back and look for the first appearance of the swiss…
…and i have to start theorizing about who the 4th mystery character might be!
page 6.
if brendan didn’t re-build al (for the second time), then who might have?
surely, not sulla?

:-(
how long until we find out what’s happening?
maybe the end of january (if we’re lucky)?

just finished reading the whole comic twice, i really love this story.
i’m really glad i found it specially today on my very lonely new year.

I’m loving these pages, but I really miss Sulla. I can’t wait for her to show up again.
Oh crap, as if things weren’t awkward enough already… :(

Ooh Brendan, that might not have been the right thing to say.

Can you explain why my comments, have twice been not published?
So when do we get an Al action figure with multi-tool accessory?
