This scene takes place in October 2001. Everyone’s birth dates (and death dates) are listed on the cast page. Do the math for yourself (Here’s a hint, he looks older than he actually is).
Ha! Go premature greying! I actually thought he was in his fifties at least when I started reading this. Maybe he sports a beard for “professorial points” on his otherwise, bearlike physique?
Love your comic, love your style and the expressions of your characters. Thank you so much for choosing to share this awesomeness with the rest of us!
Ahem… If I count well with Al’s death date, which is 2005, and every other details… Brendan and him stayed together for 3 years and half… (well 3 years, 5 months and 13 days, to be precise but I’m not sure this would pertinent).
What just happened is obviously not just a casual thing… just done out of curiosity. For Al, I mean. Brendan is out of the question since he is the one who “confessed”.
In first place, I was thinking after reading the beginning, that the last thing Al remembers from his human life was the fact that they slept together (because of the world on the pillow) wich would have explain why both of them are pretty embarrassed to see each other again…
But more and more, I’m starting to think that what Al actually remember is Brendan leaving him, wich could explain the sad look on his face while seeing the pillow tag… and the odd atmosphere between them after Al’s resurection. And also why Brendan proposed Al to sleep on the couch.
Maybe they had a big fight over, i don’t know, maybe Al being deathly sick and being ok with his coming end (after all, Alistair seems like he didn’t wanted to be bring back), while brendan who is 16 years younger than him, so less ready for those kind of thing, didn’t want to loose him (since he “doesn’t know” how to lose)
That could explain aslo why Sulla is born one day after Al’s death.
I bet Bren was the one who found him dead. He must have been completly broke by it and created his version of Al driven by panic and sorrow. I am aiming to see what the real thrill of this story is…
But I’m just wondering, I’m the only one to think that the persons who bring the real Al back are all the robots community? Because the Ballerina said : “We are all happy to see you back”. Maybe they needed him for something. After all, Alistair and Brendan, in the flashback said “they (the robots) could be even more but we aren’t leting them do”.
Good theories! I too am speculating greatly about the fact that Sulla was ‘born’ the day after Al’s death. I really can’t wait to find out how Al was resurrected.
Ohh, I like everything you’ve said here. This is basically my line of thinking as well. I feel like Brendan “loves” Al, but not in the all-consuming way that I think Al is in love with Brendan. So it is entirely possible to me that they broke up/had a major fight before Al’s death.
To everyone who made a comment about the date – yes, I made a HUGE mistake and wrote the current year instead of the year this scene takes place, which is 2001. I’ve been making a bunch of these dumb errors lately, and I thank all of my readers who catch them. This is why we need editors!
OH. And I have to say this: I got my print copy of Volume 1 and I love it so much. And the sketch you drew in it is just amazing; I’m so happy and just tickled to death about it!
Thank you so much!
Blue, I really admire your ability to convey emotion in this style; the lines are so simple and elegant and precise. I could immediately recognize the thought process in Al’s head in the last panel, and in the first, his expression makes me wonder if Brendan is asleep on the other side of the bed. Additionally, the reflective pastels of this page are a wonderful contrast to the heated pinks and reds in the previous one. You are an enormous artistic inspiration to me and I cannot thank you enough for letting us watch your story unfold.
I was wondering if, at that time of the chronological story, the razor was really usefull to Al… even if he does shave later since the comics start with an moustachloed Alistair… But I guess this question is solved today…
A lot of people have said this has only been like a week. Calender at the start of the chapter says August. That calender says it’s now October. They’ve known eachother for at least a month, potentially two. :)

I wonder if it’s not actually what all is about?

Trust Al to go straight back to worrying again :)
And I only just noticed that the little alarm clock turns to look at him when he says ‘Sh.’ Aww.
I don’t think he looks too worried. He actually looks like a cross between surprised and contemplative in the last panel.
And once again I have to drool over Al. Mm mm mm.
Contemplative, maybe, but he’s forgotten to turn the sink tap off :)

I think he might be contemplating what that kiss felt like. Why else would he be touching his own lips like that?
I feel like there should be a cigarette in there.
Aw man his little coqui alarm clock is so cute AL WHY ARE ALL YOUR INVENTIONS SO CUTE EEEEEEE

Al, that’s kinda an open window there, won’t the neighbors complain?
(no, they’ll be too busy squeeing)
and he’s hanging out the window and it’s 65 degrees out. What a space case *affectionate sigh*
allie has “padding” — i’m sure he’ll be a’ight, rosito
wellllll that escalated quickly.
